SSC CGL 2026 Exam Pattern – The New Sectional Timing Rule
Tier-1 (Computer-Based)
Tier-1 is qualifying in nature for some posts and counting for shortlisting. It has 4 sections, 100 questions total, 200 marks, 60 minutes overall – but now with sectional timing.
- Section A: General Intelligence and Reasoning – 25 questions, 50 marks
- Section B: General Awareness – 25 questions, 50 marks
- Section C: Quantitative Aptitude – 25 questions, 50 marks
- Section D: English Comprehension – 25 questions, 50 marks
- Negative marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong answer.
The new sectional timing means you can no longer “park” weaker sections for the end – each section locks once its time elapses. Candidates must rehearse pacing in mock tests from Day 1.
Tier-2 (Computer-Based, Multi-Paper)
Tier-2 is the principal merit-decider for almost all CGL posts. It has three papers:
- Paper-I (compulsory for all): 3 sessions covering Mathematical Abilities, Reasoning, English, General Awareness, Computer Knowledge, and a Data Entry Speed Test (DEST). 270 marks total + DEST qualifying.
- Paper-II (for JSO applicants): Statistics – 200 marks.
- Paper-III (for AAO/AAOf applicants): General Studies (Finance and Economics) – 200 marks.

SSC CGL 2026 – 12-Week Study Plan
From notification to Tier-1, candidates have roughly 12-14 weeks. Here is a battle-tested template:
- Weeks 1-4 (Concept Build): 3 hours/day – one topic per section per day. Build base in Quant + Reasoning. Daily 30-minute current affairs digest. Take 1 sectional test per section per week.
- Weeks 5-8 (Practice Density): 4 hours/day – move to higher-difficulty problem sets, focus on speed math (Vedic techniques, approximation). Take 2 full-length mocks per week. Analyse every mock for 90 minutes after.
- Weeks 9-11 (Revision and Mock Tier-1): 5 hours/day – 1 full mock daily, alternating with topic-revision. Build a “leakage notebook” of repeated errors.
- Week 12 (Cool down): Reduce new content. 2 mocks alternate-day. Sleep schedule sync with exam shift. Visit exam centre route a week before.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the SSC CGL 2026 notification officially out?
Yes. The Staff Selection Commission released the SSC CGL 2026 notification on 21 May 2026 at ssc.gov.in for 12,256 vacancies. Online registration is open till 20 June 2026.
What is sectional timing in SSC CGL 2026?
Sectional timing means each of the 4 sections in Tier-1 (and the sub-papers in Tier-2) has its own dedicated time slot. Once that slot ends, the section locks and you cannot return to it. This is a major change from earlier years where candidates could freely move across sections within the overall 60 minutes.
Can a final-year student apply for SSC CGL 2026?
Yes, provided the candidate is able to produce a Bachelor’s degree certificate dated on or before 1 August 2026. Final-year students in 2026 graduation can apply but must complete their degree before the cut-off.
How is the SSC CGL final merit calculated?
For most posts, Tier-2 marks are the basis of final merit; Tier-1 is qualifying. For AAO/AAOf, Tier-2 Paper-III (General Studies – Finance and Economics) is added. For JSO, Tier-2 Paper-II (Statistics) is added. Document verification and skill test (where applicable) are qualifying-only stages.
Which post under SSC CGL has the highest salary?
Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) and Assistant Section Officer (ASO – MEA) are typically the highest-paying entry-level posts. AAO has the additional advantage of a CAG cadre structure with strong promotion velocity to SAS Accountant and Section Officer (Audit).
