The Railway Recruitment Boards have opened one of the largest Loco Pilot recruitment drives of the decade. The RRB ALP Notification 2026 under CEN 01/2026, formally released on 14 May 2026 at rrbcdg.gov.in, advertises 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot vacancies across all 21 RRB zones. The online application window at rrbapply.gov.in opened on 15 May 2026 and closes on 14 June 2026. If you hold a Class 10 + ITI in a notified trade, a 3-year Engineering Diploma, or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, this is the recruitment cycle to act on.

The Govt. Exam Gurukul faculty have built a quick-action guide below for the 18 days between today (27 May 2026) and the application deadline. Skim it now; come back for the deeper Stage-1 CBT prep plan after you have filed your form.

Who Should Apply — The Honest Eligibility Test

The ALP role is one of the safety-critical railway operating posts. The eligibility filter is therefore strict, and the medical requirement is the strictest. Before you spend Rs 500 on the application fee, run yourself through this honest 5-point eligibility check:

  • Qualification: You must already hold (not be pursuing) a notified ITI trade certificate, Diploma, or Engineering degree. Final-year students cannot apply.
  • Age: You should be between 18 and 30 years as on 1 July 2026. SC/ST get 5 years relaxation, OBC 3 years, PwD 10 years (general), 13 years (OBC-PwD), 15 years (SC/ST-PwD).
  • Medical standard A-1: ALP requires medical standard A-1, the highest railway medical category. Distance vision 6/6 in both eyes without glasses is mandatory. Colour vision must be normal. Any history of refractive surgery (LASIK) is a disqualifier.
  • Hearing: Audiometry must show no hearing loss above 40 dB at any speech frequency.
  • Local language and zone preference: You apply to a specific RRB zone. Familiarity with the local language helps in CBAT psychometric and on-job training, but it is not a hard application filter.

If you fail the eyesight or hearing standard, do not apply — you will lose application fee and time, and you will be deselected at the Stage-3 medical even if you clear CBT-1, CBT-2 and CBAT.

Selection Process — The Four Hurdles

Stage 1: CBT-1 (Computer-Based Test 1)

75 questions, 60 minutes, multiple choice with 1/3 negative marking. Sections: Mathematics (20), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25), General Science (20), General Awareness & Current Affairs (10). Qualifying nature — only your ranking matters for the next stage call. Cut-off typically 35-40% for general, 30% for OBC/SC/ST.

Stage 2: CBT-2 (Computer-Based Test 2)

Two parts. Part A: 100 questions in 90 minutes (Mathematics, General Intelligence, Basic Science & Engineering, General Awareness). Part B: 75 questions in 60 minutes on the relevant ITI trade / Engineering discipline you applied with. Part B is qualifying (35%) but the final merit is calculated only from Part A.

Stage 3: Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

This is unique to ALP recruitment. Psychometric and reflex tests measuring vigilance, depth perception, perceptual speed, and concentration — competencies critical for loco pilot work. You must score the qualifying T-score in each of the test batteries. CBAT cannot be cleared by topic-revision — it requires reflex training over 30-45 days using specialised software simulators.

Stage 4: Document Verification + Medical (A-1 Standard)

Document verification confirms qualification, category, and age certificates. Medical examination confirms A-1 fitness. Both are pass/fail.

The 18-Day Application Action Plan (27 May – 14 June)

Day 1-2 (27-28 May): Eligibility Audit

Re-read CEN 01/2026 notification PDF. Confirm your ITI trade / Diploma / Engineering branch is in the notified eligible list. Check age, medical standard, category certificate validity.

Day 3-5 (29-31 May): Document Gathering

Scan and resize the following to RRB’s prescribed dimensions: passport-size photo (35×45 mm, JPG, less than 100KB), signature (JPG, less than 30KB), ITI/Diploma/Degree certificate, Class 10 certificate (proof of age), category certificate (if applicable), PwD certificate (if applicable).

Day 6-8 (1-3 June): Apply Online

Register at rrbapply.gov.in. Fill personal details, educational qualification, RRB zone preference, post preference (ALP only or ALP + Technician combined cycle if applicable). Pay application fee (Rs 500 for General/OBC; Rs 250 for SC/ST/PwD/Women/Ex-Servicemen, refundable on appearing for CBT-1). Submit and download confirmation page.

Day 9-14 (4-9 June): Buffer for Corrections

RRB typically allows form modifications within the application window. Use these days to recheck and resubmit if needed. Lock the form by 9 June — do not wait for 14 June (server load spikes at deadline).

Day 15-18 (10-14 June): Start CBT-1 Prep

Begin the Govt. Exam Gurukul Stage-1 prep cycle. Free Day-1 diagnostic mock available on calling 7033005444 — our team will share the test link via WhatsApp.

Common Application Mistakes — The Top 5

  • Wrong ITI trade selection — Only specific trades are notified eligible. Picking a non-notified trade leads to rejection at document verification.
  • Photo and signature size errors — RRB’s auto-validation is unforgiving on pixel dimensions. Use the prescribed resizer.
  • Multiple RRB zone applications — You can apply to only one RRB zone per CEN. Duplicate applications across zones lead to all being cancelled.
  • Category certificate format mismatch — OBC non-creamy layer certificates older than 1 year (as on closing date) are rejected.
  • Missing payment confirmation — If the bank gateway shows debit but RRB shows “fee pending”, wait 24 hours, then raise a grievance through the RRB helpline. Do not pay twice.

Salary, Service Conditions, and Career Path

An Assistant Loco Pilot is recruited at Level 2 of the 7th CPC pay matrix. Approximate compensation in 2026:

  • Basic pay: Rs 19,900
  • Dearness Allowance: Approximately 50% of basic (varies with index)
  • HRA: 8-24% depending on city class
  • Running allowance: Rs 11,000-15,000 per month based on kilometres operated (the distinctive ALP perk)
  • Gross monthly: Rs 35,000-45,000 (entry, including running allowance)
  • Promotion path: ALP → Senior Assistant Loco Pilot (3-5 years) → Loco Pilot Goods (5-7 years) → Loco Pilot Passenger → Loco Pilot Mail/Express → Loco Pilot Shatabdi/Rajdhani → Loco Inspector

The promotion ladder is among the most secure in the railways. A diligent ALP can reach Mail/Express Loco Pilot within 12-15 years with substantially higher running allowance and a clearer command of premium routes.

How RRB ALP 2026 Compares With Other Live Railway Recruitments

If you are weighing options, the railway recruitment pipeline is unusually active this cycle. A quick comparator with other live notifications:

  • RRB ALP vs RRB NTPC Graduate: NTPC Graduate (5,810 posts) targets degree holders for non-running posts (Goods Guard, Station Master, etc.). ALP is for ITI/Diploma/Engineering holders for safety-critical running staff. ALP pays higher gross due to running allowance.
  • RRB ALP vs RRB Group D: Group D is entry-level (Class 10 only) at Level 1. ALP requires technical qualification and pays significantly more.
  • RRB ALP vs SSC CGL: Different cohort entirely. CGL targets graduates for administrative roles in central ministries; ALP targets ITI/Diploma holders for railway operations. See our SSC CGL 2026 sectional-timing guide if you are eligible for both.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can a final-year ITI / Engineering student apply for RRB ALP 2026?

No. The notification requires the qualification to be already completed as on the closing date (14 June 2026). Final-year students must wait for the next CEN cycle.

2. Is the application fee refundable?

Partially. SC/ST/PwD/Women/Ex-Servicemen candidates’ Rs 250 is refunded on appearing for CBT-1. General/OBC’s Rs 500 has Rs 400 refunded on appearing for CBT-1; Rs 100 retained.

3. Can I wear glasses for the medical examination?

No. ALP medical standard A-1 requires distance vision 6/6 in both eyes without any visual aid. If you cannot meet uncorrected 6/6 vision, do not apply for ALP. Consider Technician or non-safety category posts instead.

4. When will CBT-1 be conducted?

RRB has not announced exam dates yet. Based on past cycle patterns, expect CBT-1 between November 2026 and January 2027. Admit cards release approximately 10 days before the exam.

5. Can I prepare for CBAT alongside CBT-1?

Yes — in fact you should. CBAT cannot be crammed in 2 weeks. Start CBAT simulator practice from Day 1 of CBT-1 prep. Govt. Exam Gurukul’s Stage-3 CBAT module is included with our ALP integrated programme.
